Result
Bognor 3, Crowborough 5
Crowborough
Colts travelled to Bognor for a bottom of the league clash,
a match that both sides needed to win to climb the table.
Crowborough arrived with 15 players and no subs, not ideal,
Bognor had a full compliment of 22 available players.
The first half was a torrid affair for Crowborough, going
behind with a successful Bognor penalty. The Crowborough
forwards were lethargic and lacked inspiration whilst
the backs had little opportunity to create. Crowborough
spent most of the half defending in their own half. Finally
collecting a kick in their our own 22 Harry Slatter ran
out of defence moving the ball on successfully and after
some determined passing and running collected the ball
again to score under the posts. The conversion was charged
down leaving the half time score at 3 points to 5.
In the second half the tables were turned and Crowborough
at last began to make progress spending long periods in
the Bognor half . Crowborough played much better and were
able to exert plenty of pressure with at least two charge
downs within the Bognor 22 by Ludgate and Webster. Neither
side was able to break the other and their was no more
score for either team. Crowborough came away with the
all important win.
Crowborough man of the match awarded to David Sparrow
for doggedly battling behind a pack offering little protection.

GAME
Bognor V Crowborough AWAY Sunday 31st January KO to be
confirmed, watch this space for updates
League
Result Brighton 24, Crowborough 8
Well
done to the whole squad (16) players who all contributed
to an excellent performance against the League leaders
Brighton. Crowborough battled hard giving very little
away and it was a true test of the teams character, to
finish strongly in the face of Brighton substitutions.
Crowborough were starved of possession but more than made
up for that with aggressive rucking and mauling, in fact
the Brighton pack became frustrated with a solid powerfully
display of forward play by the Crowborough 8. The Brighton
backs were hesitant at 10 giving Crowborough the opportunity
to really get in the faces of the opposition in mid field.
Brighton were dangerous when given space and their scores
came from aggressive running wide around the Crowborough
flanks, this strategy did not work all the time thanks
to Crowborough man of the match Harry Slatter playing
his first match a full back and saving at least two certain
trys. Crowborough Colts have nothing to fear and if the
spirit of this game can be maintained then they should
move up the league table over the next few games.
On
a negative note we are still missing some players who
NEED to be training and playing
A
very fair and balanced summary. Despite Brighton having
both a size and weight advantage in the forwards, our
guys weren't intimidated and kept going although there
clearly were some very tired and sore bodies in the final
quarter. It was a really gutsy performance, with a scoreline
that possibly flattered the winners.
Cheers, Paddy

Another
solid performance by the team and a well deserved victory.
Crowborough
Colts 23, Pulborough Colts 16
Congratulations
to you all, you really had to dig deep in the second half
when the Pulborough forwards put on the power, fantastic
concentration and effort by you all to keep in front and
get the victory. I think Pulborough had at least 5 subs
and were able to bring on fresh legs, we kept them out
with great determination.
Once again every member of the team made an excellent
contribution, well done especially to Michael Davis who
kept a clean kicking sheet with 2 conversions and 3 penalties
(although a little more height on the kicks would have
been good) it was so important for the victory to keep
the scoreboard ticking over.
Two excellent tries by Andy and Alex and a huge effort
by the forwards in the second half to drive the Pulborough
forwards back from our line, just when they were looking
dominant. ombined with some excellent running and handling
from the backs.
It really was a pleasure to watch, particularly with the
conditions underfoot, and to really bring the smile to
all of the spectators what a fantastic rainbow.
Once again a very difficult decision for man of
the match, it goes to bigslatts, well done Harry for a
great performance (for the second week on the
wing)
On a general note I think we should all congratulate the
club on the quality of the pitches, certainly in my 10
years at Crowborough I have never seen the pitches so
good after so much rain.
Once
again well done to you all.

Result
Sunday 15th November
Crowborough
Colts 17, Crawley Colts 17
Well
done to the players for an excellent performance. A few
things need to be kept in mind when accessing this performance.
15 min's before KO we only had 11 players, for the whole
of the second half we were one player down and for some
of the half two players down ( many thanks to Ian Geering
for not only running the line but bringing this to the
attention of the Referee and getting the differance in
players back to one). Two of our players, Tom and Michael
had taken part in the Sussex Training game in the morning
and it was a great effort on their part to come and get
involved in this match. We had a number of player playing
out of position one of which, Charlie Nicholl earned Crowborough
man of the match, well done. I have checked the League
results although Crawley are in the B league they are
undefeated with maximum bonus points so we can be very
proud of our performance. A few other notable performances,
Oliver for a couple of try saving tackles, Antoine for
tying up so many of the Crawley players and hindering
their distribution, Tom, Michael and Andy for our three
well worked trys, however every player contributed.

A
disappointing result, a shame we left it until the final
15min before starting to really play. Hove had a big well
drilled pack which we were unable to control so starved
of the ball we found it was always going to be a struggle.
In addition with picked up lots of injuries and at one
point had 3 or 4 forwards playing in the backs, not ideal.

Team
selection for Sunday
I
will not say too much about the game last Sunday as this
is an open forum for all to see. We discussed the detail
after the game and again at training last night. Fundamentally
I think we all agree the first half performance was very
disappointing and we let ourselves down. We should have
won.
MAN
OF THE MATCH Laurence Fisher, congratulations
to him
There
are two messages I want to emphasise:
1) we must improve communication on the pitch so you all
know what is meant to happen.
2) we need as near full attendance at training as possible.
Last night we had ten! Of a potential 26 or so players
3 were ill, 6 injured, 1 working, 1 unavailable, 2 no
transport the other 5 or 6 no message. Illness and injury
cannot be helped nor can the occasional transport, work
or other problem but we do need the numbers and commitment
to the squad.
Do ensure you let one of the coaches or Simon know if
you are unable to attend, we assume you are all available
unless you say so. This is for matches and training which
for those of you who are still not sure is on TUESDAY
night.
The team sheet is now on the website, we have tried to
take account of injury so if your name is not on the sheet
do not just assume you will not be playing. Please confirm
to Simon or me if you are available or not, also please
tell us if you are travelling direct to Hove or will be
meeting with us at CRFC, if so do you need transport or
do you have space available for someone else.
The
meet time is 10:30 am at CRFC clubhouse we will be leaving
at 10:45am. Those travelling direct please ensure you
are at Hove by 12 noon ready to warm up. Do take Simon
and my mobile numbers with you in case you have a problem
on route or cannot find Hove’s ground.
Their address is The Recreation Ground, Shirley
Drive, Hove BN3 6QP
Finally we have an under 17’s cup match away at Bognor
on the 18 October we need as many under 17’s and U16’s
training next Tuesday as possible. Please encourage all
under 16’s you know to be there. For any Under 18’s who
would like an adult game on Saturday the 17 October talk
to me and I will advise if I think you should play and
try to ensure you have a game.

Well

What
a great turnout last night, the best ever showing true
commitment from all of you. There were one or two who
could not make it which is a shame but fully understandable.
Please continue to keep the coaches informed if you are
unable to be here, no message and we will assume you will
attend. Sincere thanks to Graham Pratt who: reminded some
of us, things we had forgotten since last season; taught
us, things we did not know; helped us, prepare for the
new season with an insight to the latest interpretations
of the laws and the mystifying workings of a referee’s
brain.
We
have posted our selection for the opening game everyone
who was at training who is able, allowed and not injured
has a place in the squad. Do not think if you are not
in the opening fifteen you are any less of a player. We
are a squad the regulations allow us to have rolling substitutions
and we intend to take maximum advantage of it. If for
any reason you are not able to make the game let me or
Simon Reed know immediately. We do need to ensure we have
sufficient transport so please encourage parents, friends
or supporters to come along with their car if you do not
have one. Do let me know by text, email or telephone if
you are not able to make it and to confirm whether you
are going to Crowborough for 12 noon or Heathfield
for 12:30pm.
I
am sorry I am not with you for this the first league match
but I am sure you will do very well. You are a great squad,
have tremendous coaches and management, believe in yourselves,
work as a team and win the game.

The
numbers were low again at 6, Harry Lacey being the only
player to make contact to let us know he would not be
available. Do please contact Simon Reed or me if cannot
make it for any reason even those who have not yet started
training.
Given
the low numbers the session was even harder for the individuals
but each one of them worked hard and performed very well.
The emphasis was on fitness and ball control developing
into close contact.
We
still need twice the number to ensure we develop as a
squad, I will call as many of you as possible over the
next few days.
I
am away next week but training is still on with Craig
and Andy running the session do try to attend. When I
return we will be firmly in the run up to the start of
the season and we will extend from individual skills and
fitness into unit and squad development so let’s ensure
we have the numbers to run forwards and backs play.
The
Broadstone Warren camp is being planned for the weekend
of the 4th to 6th September. In principal we will camp
over night on the Friday and Saturday night finishing
at lunchtime on Sunday registration will take place on
camp. I will be at the clubhouse after camp on the 6th
September around 1pm for any players who are unable to
camp.

It
is amazing what happens when we start contact. Three of
eight injured fortunately as it turns out none seriously
although Mike Ball and his Dad ended up spending several
hours in casualty. They diagnosed a severe sprain but
hopefully he will be “up and running”. Although the numbers
training were disappointingly low we had, injury apart,
a very good session. All the players worked really hard,
proved their fitness and showed true commitment.
We
need twice the number to ensure we develop as a squad!
In
the week before next term I am planning a one /two night
camp at Broadstone Warren, we will discuss this on Wednesday.

July 2009
So
far we have had fairly consistent numbers training but
it is only half of what we should have now and a third
of the numbers we need to ensure we have the depth of
squad for the coming season. Obviously holidays and rugby
tours take players away but there are still quite a few
who haven’t found their way back as yet. If you read this
and have not started training please do and if you have
been training my consistent message is “do bring one person
with you who as yet has not attended”. I welcome more
players including those who have never played before.
If
you cannot make training please ensure you let Simon Reed
or me know.
Simon
has added the summary of the fitness exercise we undertook
two weeks ago, the target is not against each other but
to improve on your previous performance. We can only touch
on fitness during our sessions it is vital for you to
continue as you have done and develop independently as
well.
So
far I have focused on handling, catching, passing and
control of the ball. Do pick one up with a friend and
practice as often as you can there is no limit on the
improvement you can make to your skill

Inroduction to
all Colts from Gavin
I
am proud and delighted to have been invited to coach the
Crowborough Colts this coming season. Just to make it
clear Colts means both under eighteen and under seventeen
rugby players. Both age groups have specific team targets
for the season. The first being the under seventeen County
Cup competition intermingled with the under eighteen County
league and under eighteen County Cup competition. But
to be clear we are one.
After
last years success in the B league we now have the challenge
of the A league. My targets are: 1) to improve individual
rugby skills and level of ability; 2) to take the team
to their highest possible standard; A league championship
is the pinnacle. We have a fine group of support couches
and administrators with many offers of help ranging from
coaching expertise, financial assistance and general support.
The player’s commitment is to fitness, practice and the
team. This means attending training, matches and social
functions of the team. Finally, and possibly the most
important, is to commit to the highest standards of behaviour
and play.
High
standards apply not only to the players but to all who
are part of the team including coaches, administrators
and supporters. Abuse of referees, opponents or their
supporters is not acceptable. We will follow the Crowborough
tradition and morals welcoming all guests as friends.
I
look forward to the hard work of training, playing and
post play and most of all to ensuring we “The Colts” our
supporters and the Club really enjoy our rugby.
